There are so many great things happening here in Denton, we can't help but be excited about introducing you to our city. We want you to like it here, too! We hope our Denton Living section will give you an overview of all the exciting choices Denton offers.

From gunfighters and historical landmarks to Texas Longhorn cattle grazing amid modern shopping centers and skyscrapers, Denton combines historic interest with thriving community life.

A Texas Historical Commission “Main Street City”, Denton is the county seat of Denton County. It is a unique city offering the best of two worlds. Located just north of Dallas and Fort Worth at the connecting points of Interstate Highways 35E and 35W, Denton is at the summit of one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the nation. This convenient location is less than 30 minutes from the DFW Regional Airport and within an hour of any of the numerous attractions of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

The atmosphere in Denton is quiet and peaceful...but can also boast of two major state universities and every kind of benefit of the “big city.” There are plenty of things to see and do in Denton. However, one can also enjoy the “metroplex attractions”, and then hop back up to Denton for a quiet evening meal and a peaceful night’s sleep...away from the noise, crowds and high costs. All in all, Denton is an upbeat and growing city in a setting of serene neighborhoods and natural beauty...an enviable position for any community.

One of the nicest characteristics of Denton is that the cultural “season” literally lasts all year long in the “Music Capital of North Texas.” There is a diverse choice of cultural events scheduled through The University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, and the Greater Denton Arts Council. Everything from symphony orchestras to the world renowned One O’Clock Lab Band...broadway musicals to one act plays...starving artists sales to modern sculptural exhibits...all are continuously in action 365 days a year. Residents often find it hard to decide which event they will attend. And, if this is not enough---it is less than one hour to the cultural attractions of the metroplex.

Whatever one’s life or lifestyle, Denton is the place to live it to the fullest. Residents are never far from their favorite activity. Water sports enthusiasts will find plenty to do—fishing boating, skiing or camping in 31 lakes within 100 miles—with Lake Lewisville, one of Texas’ largest, only 5 minutes away, Lake Ray Roberts 20 minutes away, and huge Lake Texoma approximately one hour away. Or, if one prefers to be close to refreshments, there is plenty of water in the public swimming pools.

Our excellent city parks offer picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball courts, athletic fields, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, pavilions and community centers. The recreational centers offer year round activities ranging from preschool, tumbling for tots, racquet sports, painting, sculpture and baton twirling, to basic horsemanship, dog obedience, yoga, dancing, etc. Denton also has 4 golf courses, 2 driving ranges, racquetball, baseball, football, soccer, bowling, skating, and, of course, there are rodeos—from junior to adult, with such events as the North Texas State Fair and Denton Junior Stampede Rodeo.

Whatever one’s recreational desires, almost everything (with the exception of surf, sharks, and snow!) can be found in Denton—and a near perfect climate to do it in!

And, if it can’t be found in Denton, the metroplex is very near!

Denton enjoys an extremely low unemployment rate. Also, Denton’s close proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, DFW Regional Airport, and Alliance Airport is an added ingredient that is not only unique, but provides the opportunity to develop a diversified and vigorous economic link with the larger Metroplex market area.

In the City of Denton, state institutions and local government are the largest employers. These include the University of North Texas, Denton State School, Texas Woman’s University, Denton Independent School District and City and County employees. Denton also has numerous manufacturing concerns, all contributing to a sound economic environment.

When Denton was established in 1857 as the county seat of the 900 square mile Denton County, the courthouse square was a favorite hunting ground for wild turkey and prairie chickens. Named for pioneer preacher, lawyer and soldier, John Bunyan Denton, whose remains are buried on the courthouse lawn, the North Texas area was the home of cattle baron John Chisum and the outlaw, Sam Bass.

Today, Denton smoothly combines the past with progressive modern development. From the historic Courthouse on the Square to the elegant turn-of-the-century homes on “Silk Stocking Row”, there is abundant history for even the most enthusiastic history buff.
